What is RSV?
RSV or respiratory syncytial virus is a common virus that can cause serious illness, especially in babies and young children. According to the CDC, RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lungs) and pneumonia (infection of the lungs) in children under one year of age in the United States.
RSV and Pregnancy
But here’s something you might not know: moms-to-be can also get RSV, and it can be especially dangerous for pregnant women and their babies. It’s important to know that you can’t get vaccinated against RSV once you’re pregnant, so it’s best to take steps to prevent getting sick in the first place.
The RSV Vaccine
One way to potentially prevent RSV is to get the RSV vaccine. A recent study showed that pregnant women who received the vaccine were less likely to have a baby hospitalized for RSV in their first six months of life. So, if you’re pregnant during RSV season (usually from November to April), talk to your doctor about the vaccine.
RSV Prevention
Of course, there are other steps you can take to prevent RSV, like washing your hands often (especially before touching your face or your baby), avoiding close contact with sick people, and staying home if you’re feeling under the weather. And if your little one does get sick, make sure you’re monitoring their symptoms closely and seeking medical attention if needed.

Recipe
Spicy Garlic Shrimp
Ingredients:
- 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
- 1 lime, cut into wedges
Instructions:
- In a small bowl, mix together the garlic, smoked paprika, cumin, cayenne pepper, and sea salt.
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Add the shrimp and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until pink and cooked through.
- Add the garlic and spice mixture to the skillet and toss to coat the shrimp evenly. Cook for an additional 30 seconds to 1 minute, until fragrant.
- Remove the skillet from the heat and sprinkle with chopped parsley.
- Serve hot with lime wedges.
