So, I was browsing the interwebs and stumbled upon some interesting stuff. Apparently, some women out there can develop something called “physiologic hydronephrosis” during pregnancy. Sounds scary, right? But don’t worry, it’s just a fancy way of saying their kidneys are getting a little swollen due to all the growing baby business.

Check out this first image of some poor woman with physiologic hydronephrosis. But hey, at least the kidney stones haven’t kicked in yet, am I right? Just kidding, that sounds awful.
What Causes Maternal Hydronephrosis?
Here we have another image of yet another woman suffering from maternal hydronephrosis. You gotta hand it to the ladies, they sure do go through a lot to bring new life into the world.
Now, I don’t claim to be a medical expert, but I did some digging and found out some possible causes of this condition. Apparently, when a woman is pregnant, her uterus can start putting pressure on her urinary tract, causing swelling and blockages. And, as if that weren’t enough, hormonal changes during pregnancy can also affect the muscles that help transport urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Ain’t pregnancy grand?
If you or someone you know is dealing with maternal hydronephrosis, fear not. There are treatments available, such as antibiotics or surgery to remove any blockages. And of course, make sure to stay hydrated and listen to your doctor’s advice!
