Hey guys,
Today, I want to talk about some important changes that happen to the cervix during early pregnancy. As soon as you become pregnant, a lot of changes start happening to your body, and some of these changes can be quite mysterious. The cervix is one area of the body that undergoes significant changes during early pregnancy.
First of all, what is the cervix? The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It is a narrow passageway through which sperm passes through into the uterus during intercourse. During childbirth, the cervix dilates or opens up to allow the baby to pass through.
One significant change that occurs to the cervix during early pregnancy is the position of the cervix. You may have heard of the “high” or “low” cervical position. When a woman is not pregnant, the cervix is usually low and easily accessible for a doctor to examine. However, during early pregnancy, the cervix becomes higher and firmer, which makes it more difficult to reach. This is because the cervix is closing up to protect the developing baby.
Another change that happens to the cervix during pregnancy is the texture. Before pregnancy, the cervix feels like the end of your nose – firm and smooth. However, during pregnancy, the cervix becomes softer and almost feels like your lips. This is because the cervix is preparing for childbirth by becoming more elastic.
Finally, the cervix also begins to produce more mucus during early pregnancy. This mucus plug helps to seal off the uterus to protect the developing baby from infections. As the pregnancy progresses, this mucus plug becomes thicker and eventually falls out, indicating that labor is near.
To make things a little clearer, we’ve included some images to help explain these changes to the cervix:
